Kraft relaunches plant-based mac and cheese

If you’re a big fan of Kraft’s Notco Mac & Cheese collaboration, you’ll be thrilled to learn that it’s back on shelves. But here’s a heads up: the next time you hit the grocery aisle to stock up on your favorite, it might look a little different.

Notco has relaunched its beloved Mac & Cheese with an entirely new look. According to the brand, the updated packaging was designed to help reduce waste. The plant-based product also now features a prominent “lactose-free” label front and center, so no one misses out on the goodness,” the brand notes.

The new Mac & Cheese—made with the same recipe as the previous version—is now available at Target.

Yves Veggie Cuisine has been saved

Yves Veggie Cuisine announced it was closing in 2025, but it turned out that was only temporary. After being acquired by Maple Leaf Foods, the brand is now making a comeback, and its iconic products should be back on the shelves this summer.

“Plant protein remains a core part of our vision to be the most sustainable protein company on earth,” Adam Grogan, president and chief operating officer of Maple Leaf Foods, told Grocery Business. He added: “We see Yves as a gateway brand—particularly for consumers looking to incorporate plant protein into their diets in a more approachable way.”

Bitchin’ Sauce launches new almond dip line

Earlier this year, we reported that Bitchin’ Sauce had ventured into the tortilla chip market. But what’s a chip without a dip? Fortunately, Bitchin’ already had plenty of options, and now it has even more. The brand recently announced the launch of its new Smoky Chipotle Bitchin’ Bean Dip, along with an entirely new line of almond dips called Totally Nuts! The lineup comes in flavors like Smokeshow, Pickled Pepper, and Creamy Jalapeño.

“Real ingredients, treated right, are the most exciting thing you can put on a plate,” said Starr Edwards, Founder and CEO of Bitchin’ Sauce. “Bitchin’ Bean Dip brings that same spirit to the deli case. Inspired by the slow-simmered beans of an Oaxacan clay pot, we pair pintos with the Chipotle flavor people already love.”

“Totally Nuts! is a love letter to the ingredient that started it all,” she added. “Almonds are why this brand exists, and putting them first on the label, in a tub built to celebrate them, just felt right.

Mother’s Day is this weekend, so the VegNews Test Kitchen has been busy creating and testing recipes for the special day. We’re particularly focused on brunch and desserts, and these buttery, pistachio-rose cookies have been our absolute favorite. We used oat flour for a lighter, flakier cookie, which also makes them gluten-free.

David Attenborough is widely regarded as a national treasure in the UK. The legendary broadcaster and biologist has dedicated his life to exploring and documenting the natural world, producing some of the most influential environmental films of the past few decades. Blue Planet II, for example, helped spark a global conversation about the devastating impact of plastic pollution on marine life.

But there’s another remarkable thing about Attenborough: his age. The beloved environmentalist turns 100 today, giving him centenarian status.

There are likely many reasons behind Attenborough’s impressive longevity. Genetics may play a role—his father, Frederick Attenborough, lived until the age of 85. That’s 15 years less than his son has reached so far, but still above the UK’s average life expectancy of 82, and well beyond the US average of 77.

But genetics may not be the only factor at play. Attenborough shares several key lifestyle traits with the people who live in the world’s Blue Zones—five regions known for their high rates of healthy aging and exceptionally long lives. In these areas—including Okinawa, Japan; Sardinia, Italy; Nicoya, Costa Rica; Ikaria, Greece; and Loma Linda, CA in the US—it’s common for people to reach their 90s and even 100s without developing chronic diseases like heart disease or type 2 diabetes, which are prevalent in the West.

Netflix

So what’s their secret? There are a few, actually. People in Blue Zones tend to follow a largely plant-based diet with minimal meat, for example. They also maintain a strong sense of purpose, keep stress levels low, and stay physically active well into old age.

Here, we’ve rounded up key lifestyle habits Attenborough shares with Blue Zone residents, from his deep connection with nature to his mostly plant-based diet.

1 He doesn’t eat much meat

In all of the world’s Blue Zones, diets are centered around plant-based whole foods, with meat eaten sparingly or not at all. While David Attenborough isn’t fully vegan or vegetarian, he is a vocal critic of the meat industry, and as a result, he rarely consumes animal protein.

His primary concern is the environmental toll of meat production. It’s a leading contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, ocean pollution, and deforestation. “The planet can’t support billions of meat-eaters,” Attenborough told Radio Times in 2020. “If we all ate only plants, we’d need only half the land we use at the moment.”

“By and large, I’ve become much more vegetarian over the past few years than I thought I would ever be,” says Attenborough.

He has said he still eats small amounts of fish and chicken, but actively avoids red meat. Reducing red meat isn’t just beneficial for the planet, it’s also associated with a reduced risk of chronic disease. In fact, the World Health Organization classifies red meat as a Group 2 carcinogen. High consumption is also linked with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

BBC

2 He has a strong sense of purpose

A defining trait of Blue Zone communities is a strong sense of purpose. In Okinawa, it’s called ikigai—a “reason for being” that might involve family, community, or personal passion. David Attenborough is a clear example of this principle in action.

For decades, he has been driven by a deep commitment to educating the public about the natural world and advocating for its protection. Even at the age of 100, he remains actively engaged in his mission.

Most recently, he narrated the film Ocean, which highlights the destructive impact of industrial fishing and emphasizes the vital importance of marine ecosystems. As always, his message remains hopeful.

“The ocean can bounce back to life. If left alone, it may not just recover but thrive beyond anything anyone alive has ever seen. In front of us is a chance to protect our climate, our food, our home,” he told BBC.

3 He eats small meals

Another common thread among Blue Zone residents is their habit of eating small, plant-forward meals—often guided by the 80 percent rule, which encourages people to stop eating when they’re about 80 percent full to avoid overeating.

Attenborough has spoken openly about not being a big eater. “I’ve never really been one for eating enormous meals, and I’m not particularly a gourmet either, so I can’t pretend that I’m feeling deprived in any way or that it’s cost me all that much,” he told Radio Times.

4 He takes care of his mental and physical health by spending time in nature

Blue Zone residents don’t rely on intense workouts to stay healthy. Instead, they incorporate natural movement into their daily routines: walking, gardening, or working around the home. They also focus on managing stress, often through connection with nature.

Though Attenborough no longer undertakes the long expeditions of his younger years, he still makes time for nature walks and quiet observation, practices that benefit both mental and physical well-being.

In an episode of the Call of the Wild podcast, he offered a simple piece of advice for restoring peace of mind: “Sit down. Don’t move. Keep quiet. Wait 10 minutes. You’ll be very surprised if something pretty interesting didn’t happen. Doing that in a woodland, if you haven’t done it, it’s extraordinary. Don’t get too impatient, either.”

Wikimedia Commons | World Economic Forum

5 He maintains strong social and intergenerational connections

One of the most powerful longevity factors in Blue Zone regions is a strong sense of community and connection, especially across generations. In places like Sardinia and Nicoya, elders are deeply respected and play an important role in family life. They’re not isolated or sidelined as they age—instead, they’re seen as sources of wisdom and experience.

David Attenborough embodies this value. Despite his global fame, he remains grounded and connected, regularly collaborating with younger generations of scientists, filmmakers, and environmental activists. He has narrated films aimed at younger audiences, mentored upcoming naturalists, and often speaks about the importance of leaving a better planet for future generations.

In the past, he has spoken about the importance of climate education in schools, for example. “Bringing nature into the classroom can kindle a fascination and passion for the diversity of life on earth and can motivate a sense of responsibility to safeguard it,” he said.

Yogurt is the rushed breakfaster’s best friend: just mix it with a little bit of granola or pair with a piece of fresh fruit, and you’re good to go. It’s also a versatile ingredient that belongs in smoothies just as much as it does in a tangy tzatziki sauce. If you’re on the hunt for vegan yogurt, then look no further. We’ve scoured stores to find 16 delicious, dairy-free options.

JUMP TO THE YOGURTS

What is dairy-free yogurt?

Vegan, dairy-free yogurt is made from plant-based sources such as soy, coconut, oat, and cashews instead of dairy products. It comes in a variety of styles such as regular, Greek, French, and kefir-style probiotic drinks, as well as a variety of flavors.

In recent years, the vegan yogurt section of grocery stores has seen a lot of growth thanks to the emergence of new brands, grocery store labels, and vegan options from big names in the dairy yogurt world, including Yoplait’s Oui line.

Oui by Yoplait

A number of reasons are driving the sudden influx of dairy-free yogurt. A growing body of market research indicates that consumers are gravitating toward plant-based alternatives primarily for taste, followed by health reasons.

Sustainability is another key driver, as dairy is an emissions-heavy, resource-hungry industry that contributes to the climate crisis. Others reach for plant-based products for ethical reasons, such as the treatment of farm animals.

Is dairy-free yogurt healthier?

Since ancient history, yogurt production has been used as a method of preserving milk, and yogurt itself has long been a key ingredient in Mediterranean cuisine.

The earliest historical reference to yogurt as a health food is found in Indian Ayurvedic scripts from around 6000 BC, and it has continued to hold a reputation as a good-for-you food throughout the centuries. But it wasn’t until the early 20th century that a Bulgarian medical student named Stamen Grigorov attributed yogurt’s health benefits to lactic acid bacteria.

Forager Project

Like the dairy-based variety, most vegan yogurts are fermented using live-active cultures that have a positive effect on your gut, and some of these are similar to the types of bacterial strains used to make dairy yogurt. They help feed your gut microbiota, the name of the collective trillions of “good bacteria” that reside in your digestive system.

But is dairy-free yogurt healthier overall? Not always. Depending on what it’s made from, your vegan yogurt could be high in saturated fat, high in sugar, low in protein, or a combination of all three.

“The biggest unhealthy culprit in plant-based yogurt is added sugar,” Kelsey Lorencz, RDN, tells VegNews. “The American Heart Association recommends keeping added sugar to less than 36 grams per day for men and 25 grams per day for women. One serving of vegan yogurt can have over 10 grams of added sugars, making it hard to stay within the recommended limits.”

Another ingredient to watch out for is coconut, which gives dairy-free yogurt a creamy consistency. “Studies have found that the saturated fat in coconut oil raises low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol less than saturated fat from butter and other dairy sources, but it still raises LDL cholesterol and may not be the best choice for a heart-healthy diet,” explains Lorencz.

“Look for plant-based yogurts that use unsaturated fats and natural or low-calorie sweeteners such as stevia or monk fruit instead of saturated fat and added sugars,” she advises. Enjoy coconut-based yogurt in moderation and try yogurts made from oat, soy, cashews, or other ingredients.

I was trying to explain to my husband what a cobbler is the other day. And, well, it’s not the easiest thing to define. Cobblers can vary quite a bit from recipe to recipe! Traditional versions are topped with biscuits or something biscuit-like, like my vegan apple cobbler and vegan berry cobbler. But there are other styles too, including my personal favorite: the “magic” cobbler. That’s the style used in my vegan peach cobbler, and now this vegan lemon cobbler.

[feast_advanced_jump_to]

The magic cobbler method is much simpler than the traditional version, and it’s completely counterintuitive. You start with a layer of melted butter, add a simple cake batter, then pour the fruit filling over the batter and bake. When it’s done, the cake has risen to the top and the filling has sunk to the bottom — magic!

This vegan magic lemon cobbler is also really easy to make, but don’t mistake that for a shortcut on flavor. I LOVE the luscious filling and fluffy cake with little bits of crispy buttery edges, and I think you will too! Top it all off with a scoop of dairy-free vanilla ice cream for an absolutely heavenly treat.

Below you’ll find a list of ingredients in this recipe, with notes and substitutions. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the post to see the full recipe, including the amount of each ingredient.

Vegan butter. You can find this in the refrigerated section of most grocery stores, usually near the regular butter.

Lemon juice. You absolutely want to use freshly squeezed juice for the best flavor — lemon is our star flavor, after all!

Cornstarch.

Non-dairy milk. You can use any non-dairy milk that you’d normally drink, such as soy, almond, or oat milk. Read my guide to non-dairy milk if you need help choosing.

Coconut cream. This is the fatty, solid portion of canned coconut milk. It’s usually sold in cans, near the coconut milk. If you can’t find it, grab a couple cans of coconut milk and chill them in the fridge overnight — the cream will separate from the liquid.

Sugar. We’re using organic granulated sugar, because regular sugar is often processed using animal bone char.

Lemon zest.

Yellow food color. This is optional. You can also use a pinch of turmeric if you prefer a natural option.

Flour. I’ve only tested the recipe with all-purpose white wheat flour, so I can’t say how it will work with other varieties.

Baking powder.

Salt.

Vanilla extract.

Below is a detailed photo tutorial on how to make this dish. Scroll all the way down if you’d like to skip right to the recipe!

Step 1: Prepare. Preheat your oven to 350°F. Grab your baking dish, add your vegan butter, and place it into the oven while it preheats. You’re melting the butter and heating up the dish. You’ll also want to place a baking sheet (or similar cookware) on the rack under the dish, as cobblers can sometimes drip!

I’m afraid I can’t say, as I haven’t tried. A gluten-free flour blend would be the best option if you’d like to give it a try.

Can I omit the vegan butter?

Please don’t! The vegan butter combines with the batter during baking, and is important for getting the texture and flavor of the cake topping right.

Why didn’t my cobbler separate into layers?

Usually this is due to stirring the filling and batter together in the baking dish, so make sure not to do that. Skipping the step of preheating your baking dish and melting the butter can also skew results.

Is the filling supposed to be runny?

The filling will be very runny when it comes out of the oven. It’ll thicken up to the texture of lemon curd as it cools.

Veganism is here to stay, despite what mainstream headlines may claim—just look at the numbers. In 2025, the plant-based retail market was valued at $7.9 billion, more than double its value in 2017. Circulating rumors of vegan meat giants declaring bankruptcy and longtime brands going under may paint a stark picture, but the numbers don’t lie. According to a recent SPINS report, plant-based sales are actually improving across a number of categories. Plant-based snack bars, protein-rich plant foods, and sustainability aligned products are all helping boost the vegan market sector.

“The biggest misconception about the plant-based category is that it’s in a massive decline,” Angela Flatland, senior sales director of plant-based at SPINS, told VegNews. “The early momentum and breakout years of high growth, followed by market maturation, mean that a reset and rebalancing is a normal trajectory for any new segment.”

So, what does this mean? More innovation from brands as they seek to meet consumers’ changing needs—and cravings. With the sector poised for more innovation than ever before, vegan companies are stepping up to the plate, and VegNews editors are taste-tasting along the way. Each year, we try thousands of products, and so we’re shining light on the 10 best new products coming this year that you’ll want to enjoy on repeat.

1 Oatly popcorn-flavored milk

At Oatly, pushing boundaries is inherent to the company’s DNA. “The world’s first oat drink company” set out to revolutionize dairy-free milk in 1994, and 32 years later, it’s safe to say they’ve exceeded expectations. With a combination of eco-friendly formulations that deliver on taste and texture, and its cheeky brand identity, Oatly has set itself apart from competitors. And its popcorn-flavored milk is poised to steal the spotlight even more.

Set for a US release later this year, this novel bev tastes just like buttered popcorn. At-home baristas will relish in its potential for one-of-a-kind drinks—from popcorn cold foam toppers for an artisanal cold brew to caramel popcorn matcha lattes, the drink options know no bounds.

2 Forager Greek yogurt

Finally, a protein-rich, vegan Greek yogurt that doesn’t taste like, well, chalk. Forager Project’s new line of Greek-style yogurts swaps out dairy for a thick, tangy cashew-coconut base infused with real, organic fruit.

A tropical blend of mango and passion fruit, summer-forward blueberries and raspberries, and strawberries and rhubarb impart craveable flavor while rice protein packs up to 10 grams per serving—not to mention the added probiotics for a boost of gut-friendly bacteria. Take these yogurt cups on the go and enjoy on their own, or do like we do and top with granola and fresh fruit or spoon into smoothie blends for an upgraded post-gym protein shake.

3 Switch Foods’ vegan meat

Juicy chicken shawarma enjoyed in a warm, fluffy pita; herbaceous kafta on a bed of vermicelli rice and cucumber salad tossed in chermoula; and smoky, charred kebabs paired with a tangy yogurt-tahini sauce—skip the exorbitant delivery fees and put that passport away—mouthwatering Mediterranean flavors start in your kitchen thanks to Switch Foods’ new line of authentic meats.

Based in the United Arab Emirates, Switch Foods is poised to revolutionize the freezer aisle with specialty seasoned meats that go beyond standard burger patties and chicken nuggets.

4 Just Meat chicken

What came first: the chicken or the egg? At Eat Just, the answer’s easy. Less than a decade after launching JUST Egg, the innovators at this food-tech company turned their attention to chicken made from plants. With more vegan chicken nuggets, tenders, and popcorn chicken options than we can count, Eat Just set out to make, well, just chicken.

This fall-apart-tender protein is juicy, succulent, and shreds just like its animal counterpart, with an impressive 18 grams of protein per serving. Season with your favorite spices or opt for sweet and savory Sesame Ginger Chicken for stir-frys, tangy Buffalo Chicken for gameday spreads, or Chili Lime Chicken for stuffing into quesadillas.

5 Oshi surf and turf

What to do when after a long day, you have dinner to cook and a family with different cravings to please? Luckily, the latest collaboration between Oshi and Offbeast, two vegan protein powerhouses, offers a solution. This Surf N’ Turf bundle brings consumers Oshi’s ultra flaky fish-free salmon filets and Offbeast’s tender, juicy filet mignon in one convenient package boasting a whopping 47 grams of protein.

Grill, bake, or pan-sear, and then serve alongside mashed potatoes and broccolini à la mid-century steakhouses. Or recreate the viral salmon bowl while your dinner date digs into their garlic butter steak. It’s the best of both worlds in one marvelous meal.

6 Shire’s Naturals ravioli

At Shire’s Naturals, tender cheese-stuffed ravioli begins with cashews, Himalayan pink salt, cultures, and … classical music. As cashews undergo fermentation as part of the cheesemaking process, cheesemongers at this New Hampshire-based company play Ludwig van Beethoven to help the final product achieve a mild zest reminiscent of its dairy-based counterpart. It’s a method backed by scientists at Reuters, who found that sound waves impact the flavor of cheese as it ages. Once perfected, the cashew cheese is stuffed into pasta for toothsome, pillowy ravioli. Go for the classic cheese, or mix it up with cheesy varieties featuring roasted garlic and spinach.

This East Coast brand is already a familiar favorite for those who live in the region, but left coasters—don’t give up hope. Shire’s Naturals is currently eyeing a West Coast expansion alongside a new product line (hint: kid-friendly vegan ravioli inspired by Chef Boyardee).

7 Back to Nature white cheddar crackers

The laidback tunes of The Beach Boys, the Summer of Love in San Francisco, and the rise of the student-led Free Speech Movement—1960s California was the site of major headway across music, politics, counterculture … and yes, snacks, too. From its start in a tiny health food store 66 years ago churning out granola, Back to Nature has solidified its status as a vegan pioneer with a product portfolio that reimagines “America’s favorite snacks” with plant-based ingredients. And now, six years after debuting its Cheeze-It dupe, Back to Nature is at it again with its newest offering: White Chedda Cheezy Crackers. Pack these punchy, crispy, white cheddar crackers into lunchboxes for a savory snack made without the dairy—schoolyard nostalgia guaranteed.

8 7th Heaven Dubai chocolate bars

Chocolatier Sarah Hamouda was simply trying to satiate her pregnancy cravings for pistachio and knafeh when she unknowingly changed the world of confectionery forever. Following a now viral TikTok video, Hamouda’s creation was quickly dubbed “Dubai chocolate,” and five years after its initial inception, the bar has become as ubiquitous as vanilla ice cream.

The world went into a frenzy, and Dubai chocolate dupes popped up on shelves everywhere—but enjoying a taste of this milk-ladden global favorite proved difficult for vegans (just ask Billie Eilish, who recreated the bar from scratch). Enter: 7th Heaven. This vegan chocolatier recreates the global phenomenon with silky oat milk chocolate, crunchy shredded phyllo, and luscious pistachio butter for a bite-sized treat that rivals the original.

9 Joolies sour dates

Soft, gooey, and caramelly, Medjool dates have gained a reputation as nature’s candy. Stuff them with artisanal nut butters, coat them in dark chocolate, sprinkle with a dash of flaky salt, and you’ve got a homemade, better-for-you Snickers bar. Want an even simpler date dessert? The connoisseurs at Joolies took note, and they’re reinventing nature’s candy, quite literally.

Hand-picked, California dates are dusted in a sour, no-sugar-added coating for a chewy, lip-puckering treat that’s reminiscent of your favorite gummies. Sneak them into the movie theater for the next summer blockbuster, enjoy as pre-workout fuel, or simply indulge in an afternoon pick-me-up. We promise this is one fruit your kids will fight you for. Now, only one question remains: Blue Raspberry, Watermelon, Peachy, or Cherry Cola?

10 Sweet Loren’s ready-to-bake scones

The master bakers at Sweet Loren’s know that every successful recipe starts with a commitment to quality. Simple, non-GMO ingredients are at the heart of each decadent treat at this cult-favorite brand—from the chocolate chunks used in its ready-to-bake Fudgy Brownie Cookie Dough to the sustainably sourced palm oil in its puff pastry and pizza crusts. And now, a new fuss-free baked good looking to make your mornings sweeter: scones!

Available in Chocolate Chunk and Cinnamon Brown Sugar varieties, these place-and-bake scones reach the perfect light, tender, and slightly crumbly texture with just a few minutes in the oven. Low effort, maximum upgrade to your cup of morning tea—we’ll cheers to that.

When we’re hungry and too busy or tired to cook, most of us end up rummaging through the freezer for something easy to heat up. And while there isn’t anything wrong with throwing together some frozen nuggets and fries every now and then, it’s good to have a few convenient and healthy options stocked up, too.

JUMP TO THE MEALS

Fortunately, the $89 billion frozen meal market is packed with options that make quick, easy, and healthy plant-based food more accessible than ever. Below, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite brands to try.

The benefits of healthy frozen meals

The biggest benefit of healthy, plant-based frozen meals has to be the convenience. At the end of a long day, most people don’t want to spend a lot of time in the kitchen whipping up a nutritious meal. In fact, according to the National Institutes of Health, one-third of young adults feel they are too busy to eat healthful foods. But having a healthy frozen meal on hand can help overcome this problem.

Getty

Pre-packaged meals also help reduce food waste, as everything is pre-portioned. Frozen meals can even be nutritionally balanced, despite their reputation for being unhealthy. The most important things to look out for are options with a focus on whole, minimally processed ingredients. These tend to retain more of their original nutrients compared to heavily processed alternatives. They also often contain fewer additives and calories, and they’re higher in fiber.

9 frozen meal brands for quick and easy vegan dishes

Stock your freezer with these meal options to ensure you always have a delicious, nutritious, quick, and convenient dinner option ready to go whenever you need.

1Amy’s

When it comes to frozen burritos, pizzas, and entrées, Amy’s has been a go-to brand for vegans, and more generally, those who abstain from meat. This vegetarian brand offers a number of vegan frozen meals including Pad Thai, Spinach & Cheeze Ravioli, Homestyle Breakfast Scramble, and more.
Shop Amazon

2 Gardein

This Canadian brand is known mostly for its wide range of vegan meat products (think Crispy Chick’n Sliders and Sliced Italian Saus’ge, for example). But it also has a whole range of meatless meals, like its Ultimate Plant-Based Be’f & Broccoli Bowl. Each meal comes packed with plant-based protein—expect anywhere between 14 and 18 grams. Easy, delicious heat-and-eat meals that help meet your protein goals? Yes, please!
